Ingredients
-
3 cups whole milk (must be whole for the best texture!)
-
1 cup half-and-half or heavy cream (for an ultra-decadent version)
-
6 oz dark or bittersweet chocolate (62%–70%), coarsely chopped
-
3 tablespoons granulated sugar
-
1 tablespoon unsweetened cocoa powder (or Dutch-processed cocoa powder)
-
2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
-
1 teaspoon instant espresso powder or coffee powder (optional, for deeper chocolate flavor)
-
Pinch of kosher salt
Optional Toppings:
-
Marshmallows
-
Whipped cream
-
Caramel drizzle
-
Extra chocolate chips
Instructions
-
Add milk, half-and-half (or heavy cream), chopped chocolate, sugar, cocoa powder, vanilla extract, espresso powder (if using), and salt into the crockpot.
-
Stir to combine.
-
Cover and cook on LOW for 2 hours, stirring occasionally to ensure the chocolate fully melts and the mixture stays smooth.
-
Once hot and creamy, whisk well and switch the crockpot to the WARM setting for serving.
-
Ladle into mugs and top with your favorite toppings like whipped cream, marshmallows, or caramel.
Notes
The quality of chocolate matters! Use a high-quality dark chocolate bar, not chocolate chips, for the best melting and flavor.
This recipe can be doubled or tripled for parties.
Leftovers can be refrigerated and gently reheated on the stove or in the microwave.
