- 200g (7 oz) dark chocolate (about 70% cocoa)
- 200g (7 oz) unsalted butter, cubed
- 1 cup (200g) granulated sugar
- ½ cup (125ml) buttermilk (or regular milk)
- 2 large eggs
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 ½ cups (190g) all-purpose flour
- 2 tablespoons cocoa powder
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- ¼ teaspoon salt
Instructions
- Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 325°F (165°C). Grease and line an 8-inch round cake pan with parchment paper.
- Melt Chocolate and Butter: In a heatproof bowl, combine the dark chocolate and butter. Place the bowl over a saucepan of simmering water (double boiler method) or melt in the microwave in 20-second intervals, stirring in between until smooth and completely melted. Set aside to cool slightly.
- Mix Wet Ingredients: In a separate bowl, whisk together the sugar, buttermilk, eggs, and vanilla extract until smooth and combined.
- Combine Wet and Dry Ingredients: Add the melted chocolate mixture to the wet ingredients and mix well until combined. Sift in the flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt. Stir until smooth and no lumps remain.
- Bake: Pour the batter into the prepared cake pan and smooth the top. Bake in the preheated oven for 45-50 minutes or until a skewer inserted into the center comes out mostly clean (it might still have a few moist crumbs). The cake should be firm around the edges but slightly soft in the center.
- Cool: Allow the cake to cool in the pan for 10 minutes before transferring it to a wire rack to cool completely.
- Serve: Once cooled, you can frost the cake with your favorite icing or simply dust with powdered sugar for an easy finish. Slice and enjoy!
