Description

This German Chocolate Poke Cake is a decadent dessert with layers of chocolate cake, a sweet caramel filling, and a topping of coconut, pecans, and whipped cream. It’s irresistible and perfect for any occasion!

Ingredients

Scale

For the Cake:

  • 1 box German chocolate cake mix (plus ingredients listed on the box: eggs, oil, and water)

For the Filling:

  • 1 (14 oz) can sweetened condensed milk
  • 1 (12 oz) jar caramel sauce

For the Topping:

  • 1 cup sweetened shredded coconut
  • 1 cup chopped pecans
  • 1 (8 oz) container Cool Whip or whipped topping
  • ¼ cup chocolate chips, melted (optional for drizzle)

Instructions

For the Cake:

  1. Prepare the cake: Preheat the oven according to the instructions on the German chocolate cake mix box. Grease and flour a 9×13-inch baking dish.
  2. Bake the cake: Prepare the cake batter as directed on the box (mixing the cake mix with eggs, oil, and water). Pour the batter into the prepared baking dish and bake according to the package directions, usually about 30-35 minutes.
  3. Poke the cake: Once the cake is done and cooled for about 10 minutes, use the handle of a wooden spoon or a skewer to poke holes all over the cake, making sure to go deep enough to allow the filling to soak in.

For the Filling:

  1. Mix the filling: In a medium bowl, combine the sweetened condensed milk and caramel sauce. Stir until well combined.
  2. Fill the cake: Pour the caramel mixture over the warm cake, making sure it fills the holes. Use a spoon to help spread it evenly. Let the cake cool completely at room temperature.

For the Topping:

  1. Prepare the topping: In a small bowl, combine the shredded coconut and chopped pecans.
  2. Top the cake: Spread the Cool Whip or whipped topping evenly over the cooled cake. Then, sprinkle the coconut and pecan mixture over the whipped topping.
  3. Optional drizzle: If desired, melt the chocolate chips in the microwave or over a double boiler and drizzle it over the top of the cake for an extra layer of chocolatey goodness.

Notes

  • For an extra rich flavor, you can make your own caramel sauce instead of using the store-bought version.
  • This cake can be made a day ahead, and the flavors will only get better as it sits.

  • You can also customize the topping by adding more coconut or pecans, depending on your preference.
