Description

A classic, cozy dessert featuring tender, spiced apples topped with a crisp, buttery oat topping. This easy apple crisp is the perfect comfort food for any occasion, offering a sweet and warm treat that pairs perfectly with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Spiced Apples:

  • 6 Golden Delicious apples (peeled and chopped; other varieties can also be used, or they can be sliced)

  • 2 tbsp granulated sugar

  • ¾ tsp ground cinnamon

  • 1 ½ tsp lemon juice

For the Crisp Topping:

  • 1 cup light brown sugar

  • ¾ cup old fashioned oats (quick oats can be used, but the texture may differ)

  • ¾ cup all-purpose flour

  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon

  • Pinch of kosher salt

  • ½ cup cold unsalted butter, diced into small cubes

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×9-inch baking dish or a similar-sized dish.

  • Prepare the apples: In a large bowl, toss the chopped apples with granulated sugar, cinnamon, and lemon juice. Spread the spiced apples evenly in the prepared baking dish.

  • Make the crisp topping: In a separate bowl, combine the brown sugar, oats, flour, cinnamon, and a pinch of kosher salt. Add the diced cold butter and use a pastry cutter, fork, or your hands to cut the butter into the dry ingredients until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.

  • Assemble the apple crisp: Sprinkle the oat mixture evenly over the spiced apples in the baking dish.

  • Bake: Bake for 40-45 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the apples are tender and bubbly.

  • Serve: Let the apple crisp cool slightly before serving. Enjoy it on its own or with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream.

Notes

  • Golden Delicious apples work well for a sweet, soft apple filling, but you can mix in other varieties like Granny Smith for a bit of tartness.

  • You can make this apple crisp ahead of time and store it in the fridge, then reheat it in the oven or microwave before serving.

  • For extra flavor, try adding a pinch of nutmeg or a splash of vanilla extract to the apple filling or the topping.
