Ingredients

Scale

For the Dough:

  • 2 1/4 tsp active dry yeast
  • 1/2 cup warm milk (110°F/43°C)
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 tbsp cocoa powder
  • 1/4 cup red food coloring
  • 2 large eggs
  • 3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour (plus more for dusting)
  • 1 tsp salt

For the Filling:

  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 1 tbsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 tsp salt

For the Cream Cheese Glaze:

  • 8 oz cream cheese, softened
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 2 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 2 tbsp heavy cream (adjust to desired consistency)

Instructions

  • Prepare the dough: In a small bowl, combine the warm milk and sugar. Sprinkle the yeast over the top and stir to dissolve. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes until it becomes frothy.

  • Mix the dough ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, combine the softened butter, eggs, vanilla extract, cocoa powder, and red food coloring. Add the yeast mixture and stir to combine. Gradually add the flour and salt, mixing until a soft dough forms. Knead the dough for 5-7 minutes on a floured surface until it’s smooth and elastic.

  • Let the dough rise: Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover it with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 to 1 1/2 hours, or until it has doubled in size.

  • Prepare the filling: While the dough is rising, mix together the softened butter, brown sugar, cinnamon, granulated sugar, and salt in a medium bowl until well combined.

  • Roll out the dough: Once the dough has risen, punch it down and roll it out on a floured surface into a large rectangle (about 12×18 inches).

  • Spread the filling: Spread the cinnamon-sugar filling evenly over the rolled-out dough, leaving a small border around the edges.

  • Form the rolls: Starting from one long edge, tightly roll the dough into a log. Pinch the edges to seal and then cut the roll into 12 equal slices using a sharp knife or dental floss.

  • Second rise: Place the cinnamon rolls in a greased 9×13-inch baking dish, spacing them evenly. Cover the dish with a towel and let the rolls rise for another 30-45 minutes, or until they have puffed up.

  • Preheat the oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).

  • Bake the rolls: Bake the cinnamon rolls for 25-30 minutes, or until they are golden brown and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

  • Make the glaze: While the rolls are baking, prepare the glaze by beating together the cream cheese, butter, powdered sugar, vanilla extract, and heavy cream in a bowl until smooth and creamy. If the glaze is too thick, add more cream to reach your desired consistency.

  • Glaze the rolls: Once the rolls are out of the oven, let them cool for about 10 minutes before drizzling with the cream cheese glaze.

  • Serve: Serve warm and enjoy the delicious, melt-in-your-mouth goodness of these Red Velvet Valentine’s Day Cinnamon Rolls!

Notes

  • You can make the dough the night before and refrigerate it after the first rise. In the morning, let it come to room temperature, then proceed with the second rise and baking.
  • For an extra touch, you can sprinkle the rolls with some festive red and pink sprinkles or even top them with chocolate chips before baking.
