Description

Soft, fluffy, and slightly sweet dinner rolls with a golden-brown crust, reminiscent of the beloved Texas Roadhouse rolls. Perfectly paired with cinnamon honey butter for an irresistible treat.

Ingredients

For the Rolls:

  • 1 cup whole milk

  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar

  • 6 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened, divided

  • 1 (1/4-oz.) envelope active dry yeast

  • 1 1/2 teaspoons kosher salt

  • 1 large egg yolk, at room temperature

  • 2 large eggs, at room temperature, divided

  • 3 3/4 cups all-purpose flour, divided, plus more for work surface

  • Cooking spray

  • 1 tablespoon water

For the Cinnamon Honey Butter:

  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened

  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

  • 2 tablespoons honey

  • 2 tablespoons powdered sugar

Instructions

  1. Scald the Milk: In a small saucepan over medium heat, heat the milk until it begins to bubble around the edges. Remove from heat and let it cool to about 110°F (43°C).

  2. Activate the Yeast: In the bowl of a stand mixer, combine the warm milk, sugar, and 4 tablespoons of softened butter. Sprinkle the yeast over the mixture and let it sit for about 10 minutes, or until it becomes foamy.

  3. Prepare the Dough: Add the salt, egg yolk, 1 whole egg, and 2 cups of flour to the yeast mixture. Using the dough hook attachment, mix on low speed until combined. Gradually add the remaining flour, 1/2 cup at a time, until a soft, slightly sticky dough forms.

  4. Knead the Dough: Increase the mixer speed to medium and knead the dough for about 8-10 minutes, or until it becomes smooth and elastic.

  5. First Rise: Lightly grease a large bowl with cooking spray. Place the dough in the bowl, turning it to coat all sides. Cover with a clean kitchen towel and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.

  6. Shape the Rolls: Punch down the dough to release any air bubbles. Turn it out onto a lightly floured surface. Roll the dough into a 16×8-inch rectangle. Fold the dough in half lengthwise and pinch the edges to seal. Cut the dough into 16 squares.

  7. Second Rise: Place the dough squares onto a greased 9×13-inch baking dish, arranging them close together. Cover with a kitchen towel and let them rise for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.

  8. Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).

  9. Prepare the Egg Wash: In a small bowl, whisk together the remaining egg and water. Brush the tops of the rolls with the egg wash.

  10. Bake: Bake the rolls in the preheated oven for 12-16 minutes, or until they are golden brown.

  11. Brush with Butter: While the rolls are baking, melt the remaining 2 tablespoons of butter. As soon as the rolls are out of the oven, brush them with the melted butter.

  12. Prepare the Cinnamon Honey Butter: In a small bowl, combine the softened butter, cinnamon, honey, and powdered sugar. Mix until smooth and creamy.

  13. Serve: Serve the warm rolls with the cinnamon honey butter.

Notes

For a richer flavor, use whole milk and unsalted butter.

Ensure the milk is not too hot when adding the yeast, as it can kill the yeast

You can make the dough ahead of time and refrigerate it overnight. Allow it to come to room temperature and complete the second rise before baking.
