Description

These Ham and Cheese Puff Pastry Pinwheels are a delicious, savory snack or appetizer, combining the richness of puff pastry with the classic pairing of ham and cheese. They’re easy to make and perfect for a party, brunch, or a fun snack. With crispy, flaky pastry and a gooey cheese filling, these pinwheels are sure to be a hit!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 sheets frozen puff pastry, thawed overnight in the refrigerator

  • 3 tablespoons Dijon mustard, divided

  • 12 slices thinly-sliced, good-quality deli ham (about 10 ounces)

  • 2 cups freshly grated Gruyere, Swiss, fontina, sharp cheddar, or similar melty cheese (about 5 ounces)

  • Chopped fresh parsley, thyme, or chives (optional, for serving)

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat.

  • Prepare the puff pastry: Lay the thawed puff pastry sheets flat on a clean surface. Brush each sheet with 1½ tablespoons of Dijon mustard.

  • Layer with ham and cheese: Place 6 slices of deli ham on each pastry sheet, covering the surface evenly. Sprinkle the freshly grated cheese over the ham.

  • Roll the pastry: Starting from one edge, carefully roll up each puff pastry sheet into a tight log or cylinder. Ensure the seam is sealed to prevent the pinwheels from unrolling.

  • Slice into pinwheels: Slice each rolled puff pastry into 1-inch wide pinwheels and arrange them on the prepared baking sheet.

  • Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for 15-20 minutes or until the puff pastry is golden brown and crispy. Keep an eye on them to prevent burning.

  • Garnish and serve: Remove from the oven and let cool for a few minutes. Garnish with chopped fresh herbs like parsley, thyme, or chives, if desired. Serve warm.

Notes

  • You can use any combination of cheese you like for the filling—Gruyere and fontina create a wonderfully melty, gooey texture.

  • For a spicier twist, you can add a small amount of hot sauce or chili flakes to the Dijon mustard before spreading.

  • If you don’t have Dijon mustard, you can use yellow mustard or a whole grain mustard for a different flavor.

  • These pinwheels can be made in advance and stored in the fridge or freezer. Just bake them right before serving.
